On Saturday, November 15th 2008, Charles Eugster became a Strenflex World Champion at the age of 89. Competing in Greifensee in Zurich, Charles Eugster scored 239 points and in doing so, gained a both UK and World record. His score was better than others who were over 20 years younger.
To put this achievement in perspective, some professional soccer players couldn't pass the Strenflex gold fitness test, which is prerequisite to qualify for the Strenflex Championships, Charles accumulated more points than the winner of 6 other categories.
The Strenflex exercises are set to test to strength, endurance and flexibility. Points are awarded not only for the quality of the exercise but also the number of repetitions performed in 45 seconds. The exercises comprise: Squats, Bench Press, Clear and Press, Dips, Chin-ups, Push-ups, Sit-ups, Cardio (rowing on an Ergometer, Interval Course, including Jumping Jacks, Modified Push-ups, One leg Sit-ups and Deep Squats) and Flexibility tests. On 7th September 2008, Charles competed in 4 races and won 4 Gold medals at the World Masters Regatta 2008 in Takai, Lithuania. He was the member of winning crew in the Quads, Light Fours, Eights and Mixed Eights (cat. J). In doing so, Charles became the oldest competitor to compete and oldest competitor ever to win a gold medal at the World Masters. He has won World or Euro Gold Medals every year since 1997 (24 World and 6 Euro Gold Medals).
From 12-14 June 2008, Charles gave a talk on “Life after Dentistry” at the International College of Dentistry in Athens.
In April 2008, Charles Eugster was introduced by Swiss Magazine Dropa Balance. In addition to that, Charles' wakeboarding experience was featured in Pauline Magazine.
